Conoclinium coelestinum (previously Eupatorium coelestinum), Blue Mist Flower, Wild/Hardy Ageratum is a herbaceous perennial that is Native to the Central & Southeastern United States. It is hardy in USDA zones 5-9. These seeds were open pollinated & harvested in 2022. Conoclinium can reach 2′ high & can spread to form a dense ground cover. It can live in full sun with sufficient moisture to dappled sun in dry sites. It flowers lovely blueish/purplish flower in late summer to fall. It is an aggressive spreader by rhizomes & self seeding & can be considered a pest. It might be more suitable to a location where it can be left to spread. It is an attractive plant to bees, specifically native bees, butterflies & pollinators in general. It has many applications for use in the landscape – wildlife garden, erosion control, rain gardens, cut flowers, deer resistant, etc. I personally loved this plant in my garden, 2021 being the first season. It did really well in a shadey, moist location & added lovely purple color to an otherwise green area. However, I didn’t know about it’s more aggressive growing tendencies, so I might have to move it to another location. Again for 2022, I loved this plant – it adds such lovely purple flowers late in the season. I often saw Monarch’s feeding on the flowers. Additionally, they held up for such a long time as a cut flowers in a vase. They have overgrown their space & are crowding out the perennials in the are, but I can manage that with all the positives it brings :) GERMINATION Seeds can be direct sown in the fall or provide 3 months of moist, cold stratification in the refrigerator. Lightly press seeds into the germination mix as it needs light to germinate. Keep the soil moist but not wet. Seeds should germinate in 7-14 days.
