Tips for Keeping Your Terrarium Thriving In Warmer Weather
Terrariums are lovely additions to any home, and they can be surprisingly easy to care for. However, during hot weather conditions, it’s important to take extra care of your terrarium to ensure that it doesn’t become too overheated. Here are a few tips on how to keep your terrarium cool and comfortable during the summer months.
Terrarium Placement
One of the most important things you can do to keep your terrarium cool is to place it in the right location. Avoid putting it in direct sunlight, as this will cause the temperature inside the terrarium to rise quickly. If possible, find a spot that gets indirect sunlight or is shaded for part of the day.
If it does get some sun, consider adding a sheer curtain to filter the light, or surround your terrarium with house plants. A great opportunity to plantscape your home.
Terrarium Ventilation
Another key element in keeping your terrarium cool is to ensure it has good ventilation. If the air inside the terrarium becomes too stagnant, it will start to overheat.
Make sure your terrarium has at least one opening that can be covered with mesh or screen to allow for airflow. If it’s too airtight, the heat will build up inside and potentially damage your plants.
Should I take off the lid of my terrarium in hot weather?
If your terrarium is in a hot, sunny location, you may need to take the lid off for a few hours each day to allow the heat to escape. If the temperature inside the terrarium gets too high, your plants could suffer. Be sure to check the temperature inside the terrarium regularly during hot weather months. If it gets too hot, simply remove the lid for a few hours to allow the heat to escape and consider moving the terrarium to a cooler location.
Watering and Misting Your Terrarium
It’s important to keep your plants watered during hot weather, as they will lose water faster due to evaporation. Be sure to check the moisture level in the soil regularly and water as needed. If the soil is drying out too quickly, you may need to mist the plants or add a layer of pebbles to the bottom of the terrarium to help hold in moisture.
Other handy tips to help your terrarium survive hot weather include:
• Add a layer of mulch or peat moss to the top of the soil to help hold in moisture.
• Place a small fan near the terrarium to help circulate the air and keep it cool.
• Avoid using heat-producing lights, such as incandescent bulbs, near the terrarium.
• If possible, move the terrarium to a cooler location during the hottest part of the day.
Hot weather can be tough on your terrarium, but by taking some precautions you can ensure it survives the summer months. Be sure to place your terrarium in a cool location, provide good ventilation, and keep an eye on the soil moisture levels. If necessary, take the lid off for a few hours each day to allow the heat to escape. With some care, your terrarium will thrive all summer long.
