Tradescantia Zebrina (Inch Plant)

A popular houseplant, the Tradescantia Zebrina makes for an excellent terrarium plant too. Sometimes referred to as the inchplant.

Tradescantia zebrina in Terrariums: Growth, Control and Real Limitations

Tradescantia zebrina, commonly known as inch plant and also widely sold under older common-name variants, is a fast-growing trailing plant with purple, silver and green striped foliage. It is often used in terrariums for colour and movement, but its rapid growth makes it one of the more difficult plants to control long term. Browse current listings here:

Tradescantia zebrina summary

Key characteristics: Fast trailing vine, purple striped foliage
Terrarium suitability: ★★★☆☆ (3/5)
Temperature: 15–24°C (59–75°F)
Watering: Lightly moist, allow slight drying
Humidity: Moderate to high, performs best with higher humidity
Growth rate: Fast

Where to buy

Tradescantia zebrina is easy to establish in terrariums but difficult to manage over time. It grows quickly, roots along stems and can spread across surfaces, making it more suitable as a controlled accent plant than a core planting choice.

Terrarium suitability overview

  • Closed terrariums: Moderate fit
  • Open terrariums: Good fit
  • Small sealed jars: Not suitable
  • Large builds: Usable with regular pruning

Common names and plant type

  • Botanical name: Tradescantia zebrina
  • Common names: Inch plant, Zebrina
  • Plant type: Trailing tropical vine

Terrarium suitability

This plant is not inherently unsuitable for terrariums, but it behaves differently to classic small terrarium plants. It is best used intentionally and controlled from the start.

In enclosed or small builds, it often becomes too large, tangles through other plants and disrupts the overall design.

Climate and environmental requirements

  • Temperature: 15–24°C (59–75°F) for best growth
  • Humidity: Moderate to high
  • Light: Bright indirect or bright filtered light

Water and substrate behaviour

  • Prefers lightly moist soil
  • Tolerates some drying between waterings
  • Sensitive to prolonged waterlogging

While more tolerant than many terrarium plants, excessive moisture can still lead to root rot, particularly in enclosed systems.

Growth behaviour

  • Very fast trailing growth
  • Roots easily along stems
  • Spreads across surfaces and other plants

This growth habit is the main challenge. Without regular trimming, it can quickly take over a terrarium and outcompete slower-growing plants.

Propagation

  • Very easy to propagate from stem cuttings
  • Cuttings root quickly in water or substrate
  • Broken stems will often re-root naturally

This makes it easy to maintain or replace sections, but also contributes to how quickly it spreads in enclosed environments.

Where it works well

  • Open terrariums
  • Larger builds with space to manage growth
  • Edge planting where it can trail outward

Where it fails

  • Small sealed terrariums
  • Overcrowded builds
  • Low-light environments

Its main limitation is not care difficulty, but growth behaviour. It is easy to keep alive but difficult to keep contained.

Pests and problems

  • Root rot from excess moisture
  • Overgrowth and crowding
  • Weak, stretched growth in low light
  • Tangling with other plants

Compatible plants

Compared to pothos and philodendron, Tradescantia zebrina grows faster and is less structured. Compared to Fittonia, it is less moisture-dependent but significantly harder to control. Compared to moss, it introduces movement rather than stability.

Lifespan in a terrarium

  • Short-term: Good
  • Long-term: Moderate with control

Long-term success depends on consistent pruning and management rather than passive growth.
